Colombia, is it safe? Hell no and fuck yes and maybe and here, have a drink.

4 Dec

I came across this beautiful blog post, and since it is hosted on Myspace, and was posted in 2007, I want to reproduce it here to preserve it. The original blog post can be found here:

http://www.myspace.com/goosekirk/blog/230637447

Sam’s brother comes for a visit. He’s twenty years older than Sam, and he’s an engineer at a nuclear power plant. His questions revolve around safety.

“I just want to be sure my little brother’s safe down here,” he says. Well, given his profession, the safety obsession makes sense.

He’s pleased to see Sam has an extended family in Bogotá, us ragtag group of expats that look after each other in such a dangerous, unseemly environment.

“So what’s the biggest risk you guys face down here?” he asks me over the pounding music in the bar.

“Honestly?” I reply, “Getting hit by a bus.”

Sam laughs, but his eyebrows go up as he heartily agrees. I’ve almost absentmindedly strolled into traffic a few times, and that’s definitely the scariest thing I’ve ever experienced. Anything else can be explained – oh, he was caught in a crossfire, gut-stabbed by a drug-addled mugger, pissed off the wrong guy in the wrong place, the grenade ignited the propane heater on the deck of the bar, these things happen – but hit by a bus while jabbering on a cell phone? Fuck me, that’s no way to go.

El Cocuy, Colombia

El Cocuy, Colombia

Everything in Colombia is a contradiction. I’m fond of saying I’m so fond of Colombia because it’s like the entire world condensed into one country. It’s a land of tremendous opportunity and limitless destruction, paradise and damnation, say what you want about the place and it’s probably accurate in some way. Nothing is true and everything is permitted, and vice versa. But everyone wants to know the same thing about Colombia:

Is it safe?

The horror of existing

11 May

I am a fan of the work of the director Lars von Trier and his viewpoint on the inherit evil of existence.

I am of the opinion that existing is a horrible, depressing thing. And we need to constantly distract ourselves from that horror, if we are left too long to examine life we will walk away feeling empty and go a little crazy. Just take a completely neutral look at nature, the sea, the forest, your own backyard. Get rid of the fantasies of butterflies, beautiful flowers, singing birds, playful dolphins and really look. You will see horror: animals eaten alive, starving to death, babies eaten by parents because they are unfit, cold emotionless evil at all levels of life. Sometimes we like to think that all the evil of this earth is the fault of evil men. But in the absence of people there is plenty of horror and evil.

Ethiopian Food Sucks – Everyone in DC is crazy

26 Oct

As I wrote about earlier regarding the bizarre fascination many people in the Washington DC region have with Pho, I will now rant about another fad cuisine that I feel is absolutely awful.

Ethiopian food.

“Ethiopian is a poor man’s Indian from Planet Gross-Out X. Bunch of multi-colored gross lentils heaped over an old tire. Baaaarrrrfff on my dick.”
Wise Anonymous Poster from the Internet

” If you can’t taste how gross Ethiopian food is you likely have mild brain damage, probably in the part of your brain that senses when you’re being ripped off.”
Yet more wisdom from the intertubes

Ethiopian Food is not edible

The one on the left looks like someone used the injera as toilet paper. The one on the right is giant chunks of raw beef and fat. Not sure which is worse.

Pho sucks. There, I said it.

24 Aug

I hate Pho.

Here in the Washington DC region, many people seem to go crazy over Vietnamese Pho. For those that don’t know, Pho (pronounced feh, as in ‘feh..this tastes like dishwater’) is a Vietnamese noodle soup served in a giant bucket, composed of 90% salty water, 4% undercooked, soggy flavorless meat, 4% noodle, and 2% tasteless vegetables.

Below is a handy diagram demonstrating a typical serving of Pho to  it’s approximate taste.

Pho is gross and sucks and I hate it

Pho is similair to a giant animal carcass floating in a Formaldehyde solution, in both taste and appearance

Android is Frustrating, not intuitive and not fun

30 Jun

I’ve been playing with Android phones recently, the HTC Incredible and the HTC Evo..and sorry but I  feel the OS kind of sucks.

It is not intuitive at ALL. I couldn’t figure out how to do anything..it required a friend to train me..and even after that and I tried using the Evo on my own I still could not find the task manager, figure out how to switch tasks and add/remove widgets.

Sorry…it needs to be friendlier and FAR more intuitive for me. Android may be powerful but its not friendly or easy. My user experience was frustrating. I handed the phone to my GF to play with and she was lost and frustrated within 10 seconds as well.

This never happens when we play with iPhones. Yes I understand Android is powerful, yes I understand iPhones lock you in and is not very customizable..but its EASY. It is intuitive and fun. Grandma can pick it up and use it.

Android should be powerful AND be easy to use. But right now it is only easy to use after watching tutorials or playing with it for a week.

Let me give you an example. If I did a usability test on target.com, and told a first-time user to go on the site and find a solution to their storage needs for books, I’d want this user without any tutorials or help, without having to call support, to find the bookshelf section of the site and buy a bookshelf.

If my user can’t do this, and leaves the site frustrated or having to call support..the UI is bad. It has failed.

Well that’s how Android is. Yes it’s powerful, yes it is customizable. yes I can install a new UI over the standard, but I SHOULDN’T HAVE TO.

I should be able to hand the phone to my Grandmother and she should be happily uploading youtube videos of Kitty within 5 minutes.

I think one of my favorite, intuitive task managers in a UI is on the Palm Pre. You swipe your deck of cards, find the app you want, and either click it to activate it, or flick the card away to close it. SUPER easy. SUPER intuitive.

Good article I found:

Taken – Movie Review (it sucked)

Taken movie poster

Taken Movie Poster (2008)

So I finally saw Taken this week.

I was intriqued by this cool-looking trailer I watched:

The premise is brilliant. Brian Mills (Liam Neeson) is an ex-CIA/NSA type, who has retired in order to be closer to his daughter. She goes off to Paris on a trip, and while there gets kidnapped while she is on the phone with Daddy. Continue reading

Deformed child actors and Gary Coleman

28 May

It disturbs me how much TV shows and movies cast children who have abnormal growth issues because they look ‘cute’. It’s sort of like the heavily deformed Pug dog breed, a breed so hideously misshapen they no longer have cranial brow ridges, struggle to breath and can no longer give birth naturally.

Deformed PugGary Coleman suffered from a congenital kidney disease caused by focal segmental glomerulosclerosis which halted his growth as a kid, leading to a 4 ft 8 in stature and an exaggerated childlike appearance. (awww)

On the TV Show ‘Webster’ we have Emmanuel Lewis who is now 4’3″, qualifying him as a dwarf. (growth disorders are so cute)

Other examples include child actor Atticus Shaffer, (unborn, hancock) who has type IV osteogenesis imperfecta, a bone disease that also heightens his “cute” appearance. (so adorable)

My opinion on the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission supreme court decision

3 Mar

I agree that the Government should not restrict free speech, so have to agree with the Supreme Court decision. hear me out.

As it was written in the Chicago Tribune by Steve Chapman:

“If corporate advocacy may be forbidden as it was under the law in question, it’s not just Exxon Mobil and Citigroup that are rendered mute. Nonprofit corporations set up merely to advance goals shared by citizens, such as the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Rifle Association, also have to put a sock in it. So much for the First Amendment goal of fostering debate about public policy.”

Or as was written in Salon.com by Glenn Greenwald:

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/01/22/citizens_united/index.html
“Either the First Amendment allows these speech restrictions or it doesn’t. In general, a law that violates the Constitution can’t be upheld because the law produces good outcomes….The First Amendment is not and never has been outcome-dependent; the Government is barred from restricting speech — especially political speech — no matter the good results that would result from the restrictions. That’s the price we pay for having the liberty of free speech.”

Basically, we all agree corporate corrupting influences on our democracy should be minimized..but the McCain–Feingold Act was not the (constitutional) way to do it. There has to be a constitutional manner to achieve the same goal without writing laws that limit free speech. Saying “you can’t air your ad in the 30-60 days before an election” is an obvious free speech muzzle, despite it’s good intentions. We need to find another way.

Another good defense of the Citizens United case:

http://uchicagolaw.typepad.com/faculty/2010/03/citizens-united-a-defense.html

“there are corporations on the side of almost all issues, especially when we remember that the ACLU, NRA, Sierra Club, AARP, Citizens United, and others are corporations too. Are those anti-corporate readers out there afraid of all of them or just some of them? If you like the ACLU and the Sierra Club, but not the NRA and the AARP, and as a consequence want to ban the speech of the former and not the latter, this is the road to totalitarianism. The Supreme Court is adamant that restrictions on speech cannot be based on content. Tolerating the speech of those we disagree with is one of our most sacred core values.”

Greece is in trouble

24 Feb

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=auLLhrWZiKi8&pos=8

A fine mess in Greece. This could be start of a major unraveling of the Euro..the end of the unified monetary unit as it becomes painfully obvious that a currency whose value and stability relies on the fiscal management maturity and discipline of 27 different countries..all with their own governments, culture and economy, cannot stand.

On the plus side this may finally make travel to Europe affordable again as we start to see countries with enormous debt who switched to the Euro such as Spain and Portugal return to their native currencies, with extremely favorable exchange rates against the perhaps ironically more stable US Dollar.

I absolutely HATED it.

Its ferngully meets captain planet. Except ferngully was better because it had a funny talking bat voiced by robin williams. Also, it’s basically Pocahontas.

I don’t get it. A lot of people have said that this was so visually amazing..but it was not any more spectacular to me than the end sequence of Phantom Menace or many many many video games I have played. It was a very uncreative battle with really boring military aircraft designs.

The mechs for example, could have been designed by a 10 year old. Gone are the days of Syd Meads amazing industrial designs I guess. The airships looked like a Gi Joe toy.

https://i0.wp.com/www.bigreds.com/GIjoeSpaceShuttle.jpg

Why cant they make something even 1/100th as beautiful as the japanese mech designs:

https://i0.wp.com/www.deviantart.com/download/45526462/Corporate_Assault_mech_by_flyingdebris.jpg

The helicopters looked more boring than modern military helicopter designs. The guns were boring. The body armor was boring. EVERYTHING was poorly designed…the aliens were BLUE CATS. In a world that is 100% CGI the BEST you can come up with is BLUE CATS??????????? Why not make them green people with little diddley boppers? Oh yeah because THAT would be boring and unoriginal right?

Ugh..This movie was made of epic fail. And how they win at the end couldn’t have been more ridiculous if they literally hugged a rainbow. here I will spoil it for you: they pray to a tree. Seriously. All they have to do to win is pray to a tree, and then the birdies and battle bunnies attack the bad guys and win. Yay lets go hug daffodils!

I’ll say one positive thing, I did like the design for the tiger monster things. The bird/pterodactyl things I did not like nearly as much since the face was a near duplicate of an eel. I didn’t like the idea of a universal USB for all the lifeforms there, its taking the concept of Gaia way too literally.

oh and don’t get me started on the subtitles. Papyrus. Seriously. They used papyrus. Why not comic sans? Why not times new roman? Papyrus? My god… That is on itself a glaring iceberg of the originality flaws in the film.

And really, the CGI is still not photorealistic. I am sorry..it still does not look real. The test will be when we can show footage of a human being walking around and talking and then people genuinely not be able to tell the difference. We aren’t there yet, may not get there until maybe 10 years.

Movie directors like Lucas and Cameron are acting like a teenager who just discovered solar flare filter in photoshop and use it on EVERYTHING. Just because you can fill every shot with 500,000 things does not mean you SHOULD.

Dear all online news websites

26 Oct

Dear All online new websites: Please, please, a million times please… DO NOT put long stories on multiple pages.

Why in God’s name would I want to keep clicking next to read the rest of the story? There is a thing called a scroll bar, I can utilize it to scan long stories. Or at least make multiple page stories an option people can activate if they wish.

Better yet, use LIQUID LAYOUTS. yes, the internet is not the printed page. The content can expand when viewed in larger screens, imagine that! You don’t have to have a fixed-width layout.

Beautiful Resort Prisons

28 Aug

Trip of a lifetime turns into holiday from hell as British couple are ‘poisoned, stabbed, stoned… and then robbed’

I don’t understand why people keep visiting Caribbean islands where you aren’t allowed to venture outside the resort or else you’ll get raped and robbed. These Caribbean islands are shitholes with unbelievable poverty. You can get the same beautiful beaches and water in the Florida keys and you won’t be raped and robbed and you can wander freely.

I know people who took honeynmoons to Egypt also and had to be escorted by heavily armed military anywhere they went. Seriously, why???

laura Dekker, Jessica Dubroff, Vicki Van Meter and stage parents

28 Aug

I recently read the following article:

A 13-year-old Dutch girl has been placed under state supervision after a court blocked her attempt to become the world’s youngest person to sail the globe solo.

https://i0.wp.com/yachtpals.com/files/imagecache/display/files/userimages/laura-dekker.jpg

I agree they should take this kid away from the parents. Solo round the world sailing is extremely dangerous.

This brings to mind the case of Jessica Dubroff. 7 year old girl attempting to be the youngest to fly across the country. She died on impact, along with her parents.

Trust me, kids like this do NOT want this kind of publicity and fame. It’s ALWAYS stage parents. The 7 year old Jessica, just like this new girl laura are being manipulated by stage parents seeking to use their seed to gain fame and attention to themselves.

It’s why child stars are always so fucked up. Michael Jackson is a prime example. These kids are abused and deprived of their childhood and irreparably psychologically damaged for life when stage parents take over their childhood.

Take another example,Vicki Van Meter who was a child pilot like Jessica and set child records for flying. She blew her head off at age 26 last year.

The case of 7 year-old Jessica caused new laws to be passed in the US. Under 49 USC § 44724 it is illegal to attempt to set records as a student pilot.

So going back to this dutch kid, Why else would they even inform the media or anyone about her attempt to sail around the world? Because they want the media attention, glory, fame etc. They want sponsors, they want guiness book of world records involved etc. Fucking stage parents, I wish they would yank child stars away from their families here in the US.

Here is a good article detailing how dangerous the Volvo Ocean race is, and these are professional sailors with state of the art equipment and a massive support team:

Why Capitalism Sucks

2 Apr
  • The capitalists generate their wealth by exploiting employees. An employee is not paid according to the true worth of his labor but according to what the employer is willing to pay him. The employer pays him less than what his labor is worth so that the employer can make a profit when he sells the produce.
  • Wealth and unequal distribution can create social problems (such as higher crime rates).
  • Government interference in markets can be skewed to benefit the wealthy. In particular, wealthy people have the financial means and incentives to influence or corrupt government officials and to lobby for favorable legislation.
  • Many people have little wealth left over after living expenses, so they can’t make it grow quickly. This further deepens the disparity between rich and poor.
  • Persistent long-term inequality of wealth undermines the motivation of the poor to improve their stance. This creates not only direct but perpetual sociological inequity.
  • Wealthy people save relatively more than poor people. Hence some economists believe that an unequal distribution of wealth undermines an economy’s mass buying power, effectively leading to lower aggregate sales, reduced wealth production, unemployment and crises.
  • Wealth is defined and judged incorrectly, in many different ways. In particular, people may attach value to things for seemingly irrational reasons (sentimental value). Some may also value spiritual development more than material wealth. Capitalism’s focus on absolute monetary value thus undermines the legitimacy of alternate paradigms.
  • The wealthy may not put their wealth to productive use. For example, they may buy land just to deny access to it to others, for personal or environmental reasons. They may buy out other companies that produce better products but are a competitor, and then sit on the product not allowing it to be released to the public.
  • When everything is done for profit, it creates immoral systems. For example, healthcare is currently for-profit. As a result insurance companies will seek whatever means possible to deny expensive care to people to maximize their profit. People who are poor can not afford health care and have a lower quality of life as a result. Many life-saving operations such as organ transplants are so expensive few can afford them and die instead.
  • The disparity between the laborer and the employer is enormous. Currently many executives earn over 500 times what their employees earn.
  • Companies can easily circumvent moral hazard of bad decisions by being ‘too big to fail’. The company is so large and employs so many people that if it were to fail the entire nations economy would plunge. The companies can use this is blackmail to the Government forcing the government to grant large bailouts. This therefore encourages exploitative and damaging investments and tactics by companies.
  • Capitalism encourages debt. Laborers are granted access to loaned money with interest, and encouraged to purchase large items they can not afford to purchase with cash like a house or a car or an education, and then enslaved to that debt for 30 years or more. By the time the debt is paid off the total money repaid is often times more than twice what was borrowed.
  • Capitalism does not care about individual people, only profit. As a result many companies try to get as much labor as possible from as few people as possible, ideally eliminating employees all together. The drive for cheaper labor to maximize profits results in labor being imported from overseas, which takes away jobs from those who live within the capitalist nation.
  • Capitalism encourages people to seek careers in whichever field generates the most income. Thus someone who would have been a promising teacher instead becomes an investment banker solely for the money. People do what pays the most, not what they love the most, or what they are naturally talented at. Vital work for social health such as teachers, social workers, librarians, are paid the least.
  • Capitalism discourages the pursuit of pure science. Funding is easy to find for profitable fields such as baldness treatment, impotence, obesity, skin care and other cosmetic issues, while funding for pure sciences such as theoretical physics, space exploration, etc are much harder to obtain.
  • Capitalism encourages people to seek to amass wealth and possessions rather than to help their fellow man or society. It breeds selfishness and discourages selflesness. There is no profit in helping those who have no means to repay you.
  • Capitalism displaces justice. The wealthy can afford more talented lawyers and buy their way out of excessive jail time or punishments. They can afford higher fines and fees. The poor can not afford good legal defense and suffer harsher sentences as a result.

15 Mind-Blowing Facts About Wealth And Inequality In America

Watchmen is the worst movie ever made

12 Mar

I saw Watchmen and HATED IT.

Ok..I didn’t watch the whole thing I WALKED OUT after 1 hour because I thought to myself..jesus christ I have to sit through 2 more hours of shit shit?

Malin Akerman (Silk Spectre II) is without a doubt the world’s worst actress. I have seen porn actresses who deserve an oscar for best actress compared to her. Episodes of Baywatch feature models delivering tear-inducing dramatic performances compared to her. She must give really damn good head because that is the only possible way someone without any acting skills whatsoever or martial arts skills landed a leading role in a major motion picture.

Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach) did not learn the lesson of Christian Bale as batman and decided to use an extremely irritating fake deep voice. Hey, Director Zack Snyder..if you want your character to have a deep imposing voice, CAST AN ACTOR WHO HAS THAT KIND OF VOICE.

Oh and if you enjoy staring at cock n’ balls you are in for a treat as the character if Dr.Manhattan has the super power of rampant exhibitionism.

https://i1.wp.com/img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/bboyneko/dr_manhatten.jpg

The movie is paced incredibly slow, the characters are ridiculous and you can never for even a second take them seriously. There must be some sort of mass hysteria Brittney Spears style (one of the best-selling female singer of all time, Grammy award, etc.) for this to have been so popular of a story it merited a big-budget summer film.

I will never get my $10 back but at least I only wasted one hour of my life.

What the founding fathers said about guns and gun control

10 Nov

Considering the Obama administrations possible ban of assault rifles I thought I’d show some quotes:

“Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined. The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able may have a gun.”
– Patrick Henry

Militias, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves and include all men capable of bearing arms.”
– Trench Coxe

“What, Sir, is the use of a militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty…. Whenever Governments mean to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia, in order to raise an army upon their ruins.”
– George Mason

“To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them.”
– Richard Henry Lee

Those who hammer their guns into plowshares will plow for those who do not.”
– Thomas Jefferson

“The best we can help for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed.”
– Alexander Hamilton

“What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms.”
– Thomas Jefferson

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms…disarm only those who are neither inclined or determined to commit crimes. Such laws only make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assassins; they serve to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
-Thomas Jefferson

Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the people’s liberty teeth and keystone… the rifle and the pistol are equally indispensable… more than
99% of them by their silence indicate that they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference. When firearms go, all goes,we need them every hour.”
– George Washington

Not to mention the term ‘assault rifle’ when applied to civilian semi-automatic rifles is shamefully ignorant, inaccurate and misleading:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle

An assault rifle is a selective fire rifle or carbine firing ammunition with muzzle energies intermediate between those typical of pistol and high-powered rifle ammunition. Assault rifles are the standard small arms in most modern armies, having largely replaced or supplemented larger, more powerful battle rifles, such as the World War II-era M1 Garand and SVT-40. Examples of assault rifles include the AK-47, the M16 rifle, and the Steyr AUG.

Semi-automatic rifles, though confusingly classified in the USA as assault weapons by the now defunct 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, are not assault rifles as they are not selective fire. Belt-fed weapons or rifles with fixed magazines also do not meet the definition of an assault rifle.

It’s just incredibly ignorant and idiotic. How can a man so intelligent in so many other things be so woefully stupid when it comes to firearms? The great problem in our nation is handgun crime, not assault rifle crime. It boggles my mind.

Who cares if a bank goes under? Won’t the FDIC protect depositors?

2 Oct

The FDIC is not funded well enough to bail out even a handful of the biggest banks in America. It has enough money to pay depositors of about three big banks. After that, it’s broke. But here is the real irony: The FDIC, as history will ultimately demonstrate, causes banks to fail. The FDIC creates destruction three ways. First, its very existence encourages banks to take lending risks that they would never otherwise contemplate, while it simultaneously removes depositors’ incentives to keep their bankers prudent. This double influence produces an unsound banking system. We have reached that point today.

Second, the FDIC imposes costly rules on banks. In July, it “implemented a new rule…requiring the 159 [largest] banks to keep records that will give quick access to customer information.” As the American Bankers Association puts it, the new rule “will impose a lot of burden on a lot of banks for no reason.” (AJC, 7/19) Third, the FDIC gets its money in the form of “premiums” from — guess whom? — healthy banks! So as weak banks go under, the FDIC can wring more money from still-solvent banks. If it begins calling in money during a systemic credit implosion, marginal banks will go under, requiring more money for the FDIC, which will have to take more money from banks, breaking more marginal banks, etc. The FDIC could continue this behavior until all banks are bust, but it will more likely give up and renege. Remember, every government program ultimately brings about the opposite of the stated goal, and the FDIC is no exception.

And now it’s “insuring” accounts to $250,000. Like it could have ever handled the 100k cap before.

The Happening sucked

16 Jun

I saw it, sadly.

It made me want to gouge my eyeballs out with my car keys.

Or perhaps, lay down in the grass and let a industrial lawnmower turn me into fresh fertilizer.

Yes, it was god-awful..and I enjoyed all of M Knight’s past films including Lady in the Water and the Village.

Someone needs to stop writer-director-producer man before he writes-direct-produces again! It could happen anywhere, at ANY TIME! WE ARE NOT SAFE!

The movie’s initial premise is a good one, but very very very badly executed, mostly due to hideous acting and even more atrocious dialog.

Some real examples of the dialog:

  • Woman: “we’re not going to stand around and not do anything like those assholes on TV…we are NOT ASSHOLES!”
  • Soldier: ‘Cheese and Crackers!”
  • Man: “We Lost Contact”
    • Marky Mark: “With whom??”
      • Man: (dramatic pause) “everybody”
  • Delrious little girl: “I SEE CALCULUS!”
  • marky mark: “DON’T WORRY JAKE YOU’LL STILL BE A HEARTTHROB”
  • old man: “Hot dogs are underated, they have a cool shape and contain a lot of protein”
  • marky mark: “Please Mrs Jones, hear me out, you see i’m a teacher”
  • marky mark: “we’re normal, you can tell that by our voices”
  • marky mark: “Jaaaarrrrrrrreeeeeeeedddd”
  • John Lequizamo: “Only hold my child’s hand if you mean it.”
  • Old lady: ‘You eying my lemon drink?”
  • man: “YOU AIN’T LETTIN’ THAT TOXIC GAS IN HERE! YOU might be the terrorists!”
  • marky mark (he is saying this to a potted plant) “We are just here to use the bathroom. I hope that’s ok???”
  • marky mark (to himself) “C’mon, be scientific, douchebag”

*sigh*

I’d wager sex and the city was better than this.

Niels Bohr, Electrons, and FUCK

28 May

I was reading a fascinating book entitled ‘Quantum Legacy: The Discovery That Changed Our Universe‘ by Barry R. Parker. It details the history of the discovery of Quantum Physics from the discovery of the Atom, to the various atomic models proposed by physicists to the exploration of what exactly, light IS. What is everything made of? What is behind chemical reactions? What causes atoms to bond to one another?

In the middle of the chapter detailing the life of Niels Bohr I came across this:

Niels Bohr

The word FUCK written in large letters directly over an otherwise useful and interesting, and previously decidedly unvulgar diagram detailing Bohr’s atomic model, complete with the various energy levels of electrons. Now I am pleased that an obviously mischief-minded youth actually picked up a book about such a weighty topic as Quantum Mechanics, let alone visited a public library at all. At least he glanced at this important diagram as evidenced by his taking time to write something on that page. Who knows if he one day grows up and advances our understanding of the universe. Doubtful, but possible.

Incest News

24 Mar

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Crime/2008/03/21/5066601-sun.html

News article – Man is convicted of incest and rape (his sister) based only on her word.

Sister says brother raped her FOUR YEARS AGO, and beat her TWO YEARS AGO.

She didn’t go to the hospital. She didn’t tell the authorities. Instead, she waits … UNTIL he burns the house down..that’s “the last straw” she says.

He DENIES that the rape and beating took place and HE WAS STILL CONVICTED OF INCEST AND ASSAULT? Is the jury on crack? Whatever happened to ‘innocent until proved guilty’? How do we know that vindictive little sister isn’t simply lying her ass off to fuck this guy over for burning down the house? How do we know that he isn’t simply guilty of being an idiot and a drunk? Don’t you need more than some woman’s WORD to prove a case? I say: Lady, the evidence is long gone. If he sexually assaulted you and beat you, the time to tell was after it happened. It doesn’t belong in a court of law if there’s nothing but your accusation to promote it.

We never learned from the Salem witch trials. Just because a child or a innocent woman claims someone did something horrible to them..that’s NOT enough evidence. We should require, as with all crimes, witnesses, DNA evidence etc. Too many people are convicted of rape based only on the word of a woman or child.

God and Satan

This is a very thought-provoking bit of animation from the 1985 feature length movie “The Adventures of Mark Twain”

I LOVE this sequence.

The behavior that everyone finds so chilling is not anything remotely like what Satan is ever said to have done. It is, however, textbook God behavior from the Bible.

Creating a little human civilization then getting annoyed with what they’re doing and wiping them out? How many times does Satan do that in the Bible again? Oh what was that, zero? Hmm… interesting.

Now, how many times does God do that? How many times does God wipe out a city? or instruct his chosen people to do so in the most ruthless fashion possible? How many times does God personally wipe out almost all of humanity, except one family. Or an entire city, except one family? (1 Samuel 15: 1-3 )

Who is the one who has tantrums that result in wholesale slaughter? Who is the one who clearly is repulsed by his own creation as the claymation character here is? (Genesis 6:6,7) Who is the twisted creator who carelessly destroys his creation after getting annoyed with it? It is God, time and time again.

The names have been changed to protect the ignorant.

For as much fear as can be generated by the mere name “Satan” among the religious, and even some of the non-religious who have residual carryover from being raised AROUND the religious… can anyone actually site a single bad thing he ever did? One? anything? The main action we know him for in the Bible is *suggesting* that the first two humans rise out of the ignorant, mindless zombie stage God initially intended for them, by learning of knowledge, does that sound like a bad thing? Only the ignorant fear knowledge, and admire it’s absence.

At worst that sounds mischievous. So, compare that with all the killing and punishment and damning that God has tallied up for himself and you may begin to reassess who is the hero and who is the villain in this story.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe in either of them. And I also don’t find Satan to be a particularly inspiring or lovable character at all, but at least you could say one or two positive things for him, like he tried to save our species from ignorance, felt that maybe we deserved some knowledge too rather than to just be left as playthings with no real thought in them.

I just find it amazing how simply because you are TOLD he is the villain, that’s all it takes. All it takes to make the very mere use of the same name, enough to chill you to your bone. Indoctrination, brain washing, is an incredibly strong force isn’t it?

Megatron and Cobra Commander did worse on a daily basis than Satan is said to have done in the Bible. And the only time he killed (Job) it was under the blessing and permission of God.

The thing that SHOULD be chilling to you about this segment, is that Christians are capable of finding those exact type of actions praiseworthy, inspiring, whatever, when the name of the fictional character doing them is changed BACK to “God”
