The Illusionist (2006) Trailer

I saw The Illusionist this past weekend. I was swayed by excellent reviews and by the general look and feel of the film which appealed to me. The movie is essentially a suspense / mystery / love story. Edward Norton as usual does an amazing job in the movie.

It really keeps you guessing and by the end it all comes together nicely.

I personally feel that at the end of the film, when Eisenheim gives Chief Inspector Uhl the Orange Tree secret (mechanical) we are supposed to realize once and for all that Eisenheim had no real magic powers.

The use of overly realistic magic trick special effects (perfect holograms) etc was because the film is essentially told through the eyes of Chief Inspector Uhl. To him, the magic seemed THAT real to him.

I think this is a classic case of Unreliable Narrator, in which the magic we see on screen was greatly exaggerated to sort of duplicate the awe the people would have felt upon seeing it in a dimly lit theater.

Also, the effectiveness of the film hinges on the audience guessing as to whether or not Eisenheim has real powers or is merely a performance artist.

So I felt the use of CGI for things like the Orange Tree was an effective use of CGI in carrying the plot forward rather than being just pretty.
