Issei Sagawa: The Celebrity Cannibal Murderer

The odd tale of Issei Sagawa

I randomly came across the story of Issei when reading about unusual deaths.

Issei Sagawa was a brilliant Japanese student, son of a very wealthy Japanese father. Issei obsessed over tall women. Eventually fantasy was not enough, so while studying for his degree in English literature at Wako University in Tokyo, he became attracted to a German woman who was teaching him the language.

“When I met this woman in the street,” he later said to British reporter Peter McGill, “I wondered if I could eat her.”……

Cutting deeper to find the flesh, he placed a chunk into his mouth. “[It] melted in my mouth like raw tuna in a sushi restaurant.”

To him, there was nothing more delicious, and he looked into Renee’s dead eyes to tell her so.

This page contains graphic images of the actual crime scene (organs in freezer etc)

he never got in trouble for this, to this day he is a celebrity in Japan. Money does buy anything it seems.

“Sagawa A Man of Our Time
All of us are human, including Mr. Sagawa. So he made a mistake. We all have. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
Although I have never met this famous man I feel that it would be an honour to do so. To learn from a celebrated, elegant gentleman who has experienced what few others really have and take account of and appreciate his individualism, history and bold overcoming of what could have easily been a completely devastating event for a lesser person.
Just imagine the bravery of Mr. Sagawa’s dedicated self-reformation from wayward indiscretion to successful artist and ‘man about town’.
Sure, a young, innocent and beautiful woman, with her life before her, died. But she was a Jew and all the hatred we can muster against Mr. Sagawa won’t bring her back. Yet he is still alive, still in need of our understanding, support, admiration and trust. He still needs the respect afforded to all people who have tirelessly devoted themselves to becoming more than what their life’s circumstances dealt them.
This is in no way to belittle Mr. Sagawa’s tragic actions, but it must be remembered that at that time he was a loveless young man and far from his family. I believe that people the world over – particularly school age children – would benefit from his example, both his early mistake and the formidable way he has dealt with it. And I am glad that in his homeland and now via the Internet, Mr. Sagawa’s story is being told. He provides a terrifying warning, a bizarre escapism and remains an iconic inspiration to everyone.
Does anyone know if his book, ‘In The Fog’ has been translated into English and if so where it can be purchased? Does he have a support-group of people to assist him and if so does anyone know their (or his) contact details?

Renee was not a Jew, she was German. The original post is also wrong, as he was studying in France not Tokyo when he met her. Issei is very fascinating, and so is the Japanese culture for allowing him to regain control of his life and become a celebrity, that is something that would NEVER happen here in the UK or probably anywhere else in the world. I know somewhere that you can read the first three chapters of ‘in the fog’ in English, but the lady who is translating it is taking her sweet time, and having read her comments she seems like a very impatient and angry lady who can’t really be bothered to continue. So it’s up to you if you read it, it’s left me wanting to read the rest and frustrated that I can’t. Try
Literally just after writing that I have realised that you have probably already read it, being as i checked this web address as I was copying and pasting.
If you would be happy to just read the detailed account of Issei killing Renee, and describing what each of the different parts of her body taste like, then this is written in English in a book called ‘Eat thy neighbour’ I cant remember the authours name exactly, but mark f donnelly keeps jumping into my head. This is a fantastic book if the subject area interests you!
Don’t call Renee a Jew again, and even if she was a Jew that would not have made it OK for Issei to do what he did – and get caught.
