HARD CANDY Movie Review

30 Apr

I just got done watching this movie.

Watch the Trailer Here
Watch the first 8 1/2 minutes here

also before you see the film become familiar with Rohypnol.

I thought it was very very well done. Extremely disturbing. It owes a lot I think, to two movies: Last House on the Left and Audition.

If you have ever watched Audition (one of the most disturbing movies ever made in my opinion) then you’ll get an idea of what’s in store in Hard Candy.

Honestly, the less you know about the film before going in the better, so I will leave it with this small plot summary, and then I will place the rest of my review (fullk of spoilers) under a cut.

Basic Summary: A provocative drama about a 32-year-old man who takes home a 14-year-old girl he meets on the Internet–with surprising consequences.

There! Now stop reading and go rush to see the film.

Also here is a hilarious thread from the IMDB discussion about the film:

Will girls still do it for a candy bar?

I just won a case of Willy Wonka candy bars and I was wondering if high school girls will still put out for that kind of thing. I only have one day off a week and I don’t want to waste it sitting in a van outside the high school if all I’m going to get for my trouble is a thank you note from the acne squad, if you know what I mean.

Is MySpace shut down for the night or something?

Ok first off, for those of you who saw the film, Haley did NOT perform the castration. She made him think she did. I didn’t realize it at first but yes, indeed the castration vdeo in the vcr is what she was pretending to show him on the camera. She used that clip to make him feel like he had stitches. She was mentally torturing him the entire film, weakening him and angering him so he would not think clearly.

Really, the only time Haley physically hurts him is in defending herself, like with the tazer. And in the end she doesn’t even kill him. He kills himself.

The photos in his safe were of that missing girl, being murdered. This is revealed at the very end when Jeff suddenly tearfully tells Haley he can give her the name of the guy who killed her, and that he ‘only took pictures’ but did not participate in the killing itself.

The genius of the movie is we are not sure who to root for, is Jeff really a murderer? Or just a man with a taste for young girls? So by the time we realize who the real bad guy is (Jeff) we have to reevaluate the movie, and perhaps feel guilty for rooting for Jeff at times.

Also toward the end we see Jeff’s anger come out, there is a hint of it when he screams at haley to sit down on the couch when he is behind the camera, the second time is when he stabs the photo on the wall repeatedly, saying how all women are the same (although..when he says you are all the same, did he mean little girls? or all women?)

It turns out Jeff did deserve to die for his part in the murder. Whether haley did it or the government, he’d still have been killed, still have been tortured by the process of being on death row and on trail. Haley did in a day what we as a society would have done anyway. Shes an anti-hero, a vigilante batman who gives criminal scum what they deserve, and like batman, shes fucking crazy. It takes one to capture on apparently.

On the other side, this film might end up being quite the masturbatory material for men into submissive roles in Sadomasochistic sexual fantasies.

I really enjoyed the films use of camera angles, all close up and claustrophobic, and especially the clever use of the camera during the castration scene.

I saw Last House…when I was in high school at a double-feature. It was about ten years old at the time I saw it and I was FREAKED by it. I own Audition. I can see Hostel belonging in this category as well. Ichi the Killer also but it’s really a very different vibe.
So! I will see Hard Candy but probably not until video. I almost never go to the cinema unless it’s to see some “event” film or something.
