The interesting case of Theodore Hall

19 Apr

I was reading about Theodore Hall...he was an American nuclear physicist who, during his work on Allied program to develop the first atomic bombs during World War II (the Manhattan Project)..gave the secret of the Atomic Bomb to the soviets.

The doctrine of Nuclear Deterrence assumes that neither side will dare to launch a first strike because the other side will launch on warning (also called fail-deadly) or with secondary forces (second strike) resulting in the destruction of both parties. The payoff of this doctrine is expected to be a tense but stable peace.

Now, at first glance you’d think he was a traitor, scum..etc for betraying his country. But I believe he may be the 20th centuries greatest unsung hero. Why? Because Nuclear Deterrence worked. Because the Soviets had nukes…and we had nukes..there was never a World War 3. And I’m certain without nukes we would have been well into world war 4 by now. Nuclear weapons ironically, as weapons of MASS destruction…deterred the major world powers from killing each other off.

And to this day, Nuclear Deterrence works. Why do you think we haven’t attacked North Korea? Or China? Yes, they have nukes. Mr. Hall, on his death bed confessed to be the one guy who gave the Soviets nukes. Hall was not a Communist sympathizer, but simply believed no nation should hold a nuclear monopoly. And I feel he was right, and may have saved millions of lives.
